The program offers specialized behavioral health and substance use treatment specifically designed for the needs and challenges of military dependents (children and adolescents ages 6 to 18). Using a trauma informed approach, the program focuses on the challenges faced by the children of military personnel, building upon the resiliency skills used to overcome challenges in their personal lives. Research has shown that adolescents of military families were found to have a higher prevalence of emotional and behavioral difficulties than adolescents of the general population.  Much of this is due to the parental deployment of school aged children.

Some stats reported among children of deployed parents / caregivers are:

  • 1 in 4 have an emotional / behavioral challenge.
  • 37% have excessive worry / anxiety.
  • 1 in 4 reported having feelings of depression.
  • 1 in 5 had academic problems.
  • One-third were at “high-risk” for psychosocial issues.

The Patriot Support Program, at Palm Shores BHC, is an intensive inpatient residential treatment program that utilizes social/emotional therapy and trauma-informed care to serve adolescents (ages 11 to 17) of deployed and active-duty military families. The program builds upon the resiliency skills used to overcome challenges in their personal lives.
